Wind and forecast from the National Weather Service. Check the official ramp status and reservoir level (linked below) before you head out.

If you’ve ever stood at a busy ramp watching whitecaps roll across a wide-open reservoir and thought “maybe not today,” East Canyon Reservoir is the answer to that feeling. It’s a narrow strip of water tucked into the canyon between Morgan and Henefer, and it rides about as gently as Utah lakes get. We point a lot of first-time riders and families here for exactly that reason.

Why the canyon keeps it calm

The thing that makes East Canyon Reservoir special is its shape. It’s long and skinny, hemmed in by canyon walls, so the wind has less room to build the open chop you fight on the bigger reservoirs. You’ll still feel a steady breeze (canyon air is always moving), but it tends to stay manageable rather than turning the surface into a washboard.

Mornings are the glassiest stretch of the day. As the canyon warms up, the afternoons get a little more active, so if you’re bringing kids or someone who’s never twisted a throttle before, an earlier launch buys you the smoothest water.

The narrow shape helps new riders, too. The shore is never far off, and with canyon walls on both sides it’s hard to get turned around, so nervous first-timers tend to settle in quickly.

An easy outing, not a whole trip to plan

East Canyon Reservoir sits about 47 miles from our pickup at 901 S. 1800 W in Woods Cross, just under an hour up I-84 to Morgan and then over UT-66. That’s close enough to be a real day trip: grab the machines in the morning, ride, and still have your afternoon. You don’t have to build a weekend around it or block out a whole day of driving. For a lot of Utah families, that low commitment is the whole reason this lake makes the short list.

Since we hand off the machines off-lake, your reserved time is yours the moment you arrive at the ramp. You’re not waiting on a marina counter to free up a unit before you can get on the water. Reserve a day, and that’s a settled thing.

What it’s like once you’re on the water

East Canyon Reservoir does double duty as a state park, so budget for a day-use fee at the park entrance on top of your rental. In 2026 it was $20 per vehicle; check the park’s fee page (opens in a new tab) for 2027 rates before you head out.

One rule to know before the ramp: Utah law says every boat stops at an aquatic invasive species inspection station that’s open, at the lake or on the road. When there isn’t one running, you still clean and drain the machine before leaving the water, and you always tow with the drain plug out. If you’re hopping between Utah lakes, clean and drain between each one; the full rundown is on our rider resources page.

On the water itself, this lake suits a relaxed pace. It’s a place for a calm family day, an unhurried evening cruise, or your first real time learning the controls. Not for chasing long top-speed runs. There’s bigger, more open water in our lineup if that’s what you’re after.

Any of our three Sea-Doo models is a comfortable fit for East Canyon Reservoir. Pick the day that works for your crew, and we’ll have your Sea-Doos ready when you pull up to the pickup.

Launch ramps

Before you launch: from January 1, 2027, Utah requires an annual boating safety course for every driver, visitors from out of state included. Bring proof or we'll brief you at pickup, and every machine goes out clean, drained, and AIS-compliant.

  • East Canyon State Park boat ramp: Day-use fee at the entrance. On September 17, 2026, the park reported the ramp down to one lane with the reservoir at 51%; check current conditions before you tow.

East Canyon jet ski rental FAQ

How far is East Canyon from the Woods Cross pickup?

About 47 miles, just under an hour up I-84 to Morgan and then UT-66, close enough to be a genuine day trip with your afternoon still intact.

Is East Canyon good for beginners?

It's one of the best in our lineup for first-timers: small, sheltered by the canyon, and low-traffic, so the water stays calmer than the big open reservoirs.

Do I need an AIS inspection?

If you pass an inspection station that's open, at the lake or on the road, Utah law says you stop. When it's closed, you still clean and drain the machine before leaving the water, and you always tow with the drain plug out. The rest of Utah's mussel rules apply too: every driver needs the annual boating safety course (required from January 1, 2027), and our machines already carry their current AIS decal. See our Rider Resources.

Is there a fee?

East Canyon is a state park, so expect a day-use fee at the entrance. In 2026 it was $20 per vehicle; check the park's fee page for 2027 rates.
