Flaming Gorge is the big one. A reservoir of deep, cold water carved through red rock on the Utah–Wyoming line, with canyon arms that wander for miles and open stretches where you can run wide-open and barely see another boat. It does not look like the lakes closer to the valley, and it does not ride like them either. This is the trip you plan around, not the one you squeeze into a morning.

Worth the drive, so make it a trip

About 179 miles separate our Woods Cross pickup from Lucerne Valley Marina on the Gorge, and that’s about a three-hour tow each way. We won’t pretend it’s a day trip, because it isn’t. The riders who fall for this lake treat it as a destination: a long weekend with the family, a basecamp near Dutch John or one of the marinas, and two or three full days on the water instead of one rushed afternoon.

Lucerne Valley Marina near Manila is the closest launch, with boat fuel and a store that sells Forest Service passes. Cedar Springs Marina near Dutch John is about 205 miles out (around three and a half hours), but its ramp reaches about 110 feet lower than Lucerne’s, so it’s the backup if the water keeps dropping. Both drives cross Wyoming on I-80, and Wyoming requires every boat to stop at any open check station on the way, such as the Evanston port of entry.

That suits the way we rent. You grab your jet skis from us before you leave town, tow them up, and they’re yours for the whole stretch. With day and multi-day rentals, the machines stay with you the entire trip. No scrambling for a rental slot once you’ve made the haul.

Big water, real weather

The water runs deep and cold, so even in midsummer it stays brisk. A wetsuit or an extra layer is smart if you plan to swim or take a spill.

Afternoons are the thing to watch. Wind builds across the open water and gets strongest up in the northern end, where the canyon opens out and there’s nothing to slow it down. Chop can stack up fast. Riders who know the lake plan their long open runs for the early hours and tuck into the sheltered canyon arms when the surface starts to roughen.

A few things worth keeping in your back pocket:

  • The big crossings go best before lunch, while the water’s still settled.
  • The canyon arms stay calmer when the open lake gets churned up.
  • Fuel and services are spread out, so top off and plan your range. You’re welcome to bring our gas cans, but the marina’s rules still apply: at Lucerne Valley Marina, the posted rules don’t allow filling boats from personal gas cans at the marina or on the water. Where the rules do allow a can, pull the machine out of the water and away from the ramp before you refuel. Otherwise, use the marina’s fuel.
  • Towing a tube or a wakeboarder? The Forest Service bans towing inside Horseshoe Canyon through 2028, and with the Cut Through too shallow, boats are being routed through that canyon.

Plan for the AIS inspection

Flaming Gorge takes invasive species seriously, and Utah law says every boat stops at an open AIS inspection station before launching. Build it into your schedule: the inspection is free, but figure on roughly 5 to 10 extra minutes when you arrive, so it doesn’t catch you off guard at the ramp. Showing up with a clean, drained, dry machine keeps it quick. When a station is closed, clean and drain the machine before you leave the water, and always tow with the drain plug out.

The reservoir also crosses into Wyoming, and Wyoming water needs a Wyoming AIS decal, even if you launched in Utah. For a machine registered outside Wyoming it was $30 for the 2026 calendar year (check Wyoming Game and Fish for 2027), and we don’t supply it: buy it online from Wyoming Game and Fish (opens in a new tab) (the form asks for the machine’s registration number) or from a Wyoming license agent, and keep the temporary authorization with you.

We cover the full Utah AIS rules (who needs the boater course, the inspection details, and how to prep your jet ski) on our rider resources page, and what happens at the station in our AIS inspection walkthrough, so give those a read before you tow.

Our take

Flaming Gorge is one of the most dramatic places you can ride a jet ski in this part of the country: red canyon walls, deep blue water, and room to actually open up. It takes some commitment to get there, but that’s the whole appeal. Give it a couple of days, get out early each morning, and let the scenery carry the rest. When your dates are set, we’ll have your Sea-Doos prepped and waiting in Woods Cross.

Launch ramps

Before you launch: from January 1, 2027, Utah requires an annual boating safety course for every driver, visitors from out of state included. Bring proof or we'll brief you at pickup, and every machine goes out clean, drained, and AIS-compliant.

  • Lucerne Valley Marina: Closest marina: about 179 miles from Woods Cross, near Manila; boat fuel, store, Forest Service passes.
  • Cedar Springs Marina: Lowest ramp on the lake (per the Forest Service), the low-water backup; near Dutch John.
  • Antelope Flat: Year-round boat launch.
  • Mustang Ridge: Year-round boat launch near Dutch John.

Flaming Gorge jet ski rental FAQ

How far is Flaming Gorge from the Woods Cross pickup?

Roughly 179 miles to Lucerne Valley Marina near Manila, about a three-hour tow each way, so it's a multi-day trip, not a day run.

What's the water like?

Deep, cold, and clear, with canyon arms and big open stretches. Even midsummer it stays brisk (bring a wetsuit or a layer), and afternoon wind builds hardest in the northern, open end.

Is an AIS inspection required?

Yes, whenever a station is open: Utah law says every boat stops. Plan on a quick AIS inspection before you launch, roughly 5 to 10 extra minutes when you arrive. Showing up clean, drained, and dry keeps it fast, and the inspection itself is free. When a station is closed, clean and drain the machine before you leave the water, and always tow with the drain plug out. See our Rider Resources.

Which ramp should I launch from?

The closest marina is Lucerne Valley Marina near Manila, about 179 miles from our Woods Cross pickup (about three hours), with boat fuel and a store that sells Forest Service passes. Cedar Springs Marina near Dutch John is about 205 miles (around three and a half hours), but its ramp reaches about 110 feet lower than Lucerne's, the lowest on the lake per the Forest Service, so it's the safe pick if the water keeps dropping. In 2026 both charged the same Forest Service fee, $5 per vehicle per day (check the Forest Service's fee page for 2027). Both drives cross Wyoming on I-80, and Wyoming requires every boat to stop at any open check station on the way, such as the Evanston port of entry when it's open.

Can I ride into the Wyoming side?

Yes. Flaming Gorge runs across the Wyoming line, and you're welcome to ride there. Once you're on Wyoming water you need a Wyoming AIS decal, even if you launched in Utah. For a machine registered outside Wyoming it was $30 for the 2026 calendar year (check Wyoming Game and Fish for 2027), and we don't supply it. Buy it online from Wyoming Game and Fish or from a Wyoming license agent; the online form asks for the machine's registration number, and you keep the temporary authorization with you, printed or on your phone.

Is the water low at Flaming Gorge?

It was dropping in fall 2026. Reclamation is sending extra water from Flaming Gorge to Lake Powell through April 2027, and in early October 2026 the reservoir held about 68 percent of its live capacity. By August 2026 the Anvil Draw ramp had closed and the Cut Through was too shallow for anything but kayaks, so boats go around through Horseshoe Canyon (about three extra miles). Confirm the current level and ramp status with the Forest Service before you tow.
