The lake for a day that doesn’t eat the whole day

Some of Utah’s water takes commitment. Echo isn’t one of them. It sits in Echo Canyon just north of Coalville, about 54 miles from our Woods Cross pickup and just under an hour up I-84 through Weber Canyon. You can load the trailer after breakfast, get a few good hours in, and still have your afternoon back. Echo is the in-and-out lake.

We’re a family-run Utah outfit, and Echo is where we send people who want water time without turning the day into a project. It’s compact enough that you never feel like you’re chasing the far end of it, but there’s plenty of room for a few jet skis to spread out and do their thing. Its neighbor, Rockport near Wanship, is the other easy day trip in this corner of the state.

The off-lake part matters more here than you’d think. Because you pick the machines up from us in town, there’s no rental counter to wait at once you get there. You still share the public ramp, so on a busy weekend, get there early.

Echo runs on a clock, and the clock is the wind

If there’s one thing worth knowing before you tow up the canyon, it’s that Echo keeps time. Early on, the water is glass: flat, quiet, and about as forgiving as open water gets. That’s your window. First-timers find their balance, kids settle in, and anyone who just wants smooth cruising gets the good stuff.

Then the canyon does what canyons do. Wind funnels in from the west and tends to steady up through the morning, so the glass you launched on slowly turns to chop. It’s not a problem, just a change of personality. Confident riders often like the texture, and the breeze keeps the heat honest on a hot day.

The takeaway is simple: front-load the trip. Hitch up early, ride the calm while it lasts, and let the wind be your signal that you’ve had a full morning. If you’ve got nervous or younger riders along, that early glass is exactly when you want them on the water, not at noon when the canyon’s awake.

A few notes before you tow

  • It’s a genuine reservoir, not a pond. Echo has room to actually open the throttle and deep, clean water under you. You’re not threading a puddle.
  • The AIS rules. Like every Utah lake, you stop at any inspection station that’s open, at the lake or on the road. When it’s closed, clean and drain the machine before you leave the water, and always tow with the drain plug out. We handle dry time between rentals. The state’s rules are spelled out on our rider resources page.
  • Dress for a sun-baked canyon. The water throws sunlight right back at you and there’s not much shade out there. Sunscreen, drinking water, and a light layer for the breeze earn their spot in the truck.
  • Early beats the squeeze twice. On a hot weekend the ramp area fills up. Launching early handles both the parking crunch and the afternoon wind in one move, one more reason to launch early.

Why Echo earns the trip

Echo is the easy yes for a Saturday when you want to be on the water without building the whole day around it. It’s quick to reach, roomy enough for the family, and our in-town pickup keeps the pricing fair and the rental counter out of the picture. Get up there early, catch the glass while it’s yours, and let the canyon tell you when you’re done.

When you’ve picked a date, your Sea-Doos will be prepped and ready to head up the canyon with you.

Launch ramps

Before you launch: from January 1, 2027, Utah requires an annual boating safety course for every driver, visitors from out of state included. Bring proof or we'll brief you at pickup, and every machine goes out clean, drained, and AIS-compliant.

  • Red Rock Marina (Echo State Park): New larger ramp and dock; availability varies with staffing and water level.

Echo Reservoir jet ski rental FAQ

How far is Echo from the Woods Cross pickup?

About 54 miles, just under an hour up I-84 through Weber Canyon, so it's an easy in-and-out trip.

Is Echo beginner-friendly?

Yes, early. Mornings are glass; canyon wind funnels in from the west and builds through the morning, so put new riders on the water first thing.

Do I need an AIS inspection?

If you pass an inspection station that's open, at the lake or on the road, Utah law says you stop. When it's closed, you still clean and drain the machine before leaving the water, and you always tow with the drain plug out. We handle dry time between rentals. The rest of Utah's mussel rules apply too: every driver needs the annual boating safety course (required from January 1, 2027), and our machines already carry their current AIS decal. See our Rider Resources.

Is there a fee?

Echo is a state park, so expect a day-use fee at the gate. In 2026 it was $20 per vehicle; check the park's fee page for 2027 rates.
